Technology in Sports

Tamesha Ard
IT-365

Technolgy is one of the ways sports is continually changing in the world today. Technology in
sports have been around for a long while and has been very helpful. For instance, instant replay help referees in making the right call. These aides are crucial in allowing for a fair game. In the game of basket ball referees can use instant replay to verify if a shot was taken before the shot clock ended. In the game of football instant replay is very important, as well. Not only for the referee and players, but for the coaches and fans. The coach wants to know if his team is being treated fair and every fan wants to see a spectacular play a second, third, and even a fourth time. In the article I read five ways technology changed football were listed. Among them instant replay was listed. According to the article, "The first use of instant replay in a football game came on December 7, 1963, near the end of the Army-Navy game in Philadelphia when Army quarterback Rollie Stichweh scored on a 1-yard run. Famed CBS director Tony Verna had come up with the idea for "video replay" to fill dead air time between plays. After three quarters of frustrating glitches trying to get the technology to work, Verna finally told announcer Lindsey Nelson, "Here it comes!" as Stichweh faked a handoff and darted into the end zone. This is not live," Nelson told his viewers as they watched the Army quarterback's run again. "Ladies and gentlemen, Army did not score again." A new was era was born. Verna correctly perdicted that his creation would become a huge success. Now, of course, it is used on virtually every
play, and since 1999, has been an important tool to help officials review disputed plays during a game." Also, in football there are other ways technology is being used. Thanks to the computer statistics can be kept about teams, players, and trends. Various websites specialize in keeping stats and other information.

Another example in football are high tech coaching communication devices. Helmet transmitters
allows the coach to talk to the quarterback about plays. Over the years technology has changed the way coaches are able to do their jobs. Coaches and players can analyze the game on their laptops on the airplane while flying home from a game. Even in watching the game on television, fans can enjoy high tech camera shorts at various angles. Also, slow motion camera shots, player and coach microphones, updates and scores from other games etc. ,which all make the game more exciting.

In the olympics technology is very important. Remember Michael Phelps' great victory during
last years summer olympics. Timing devices were used to verify his close win. Engineers with the U.S. Olymic Cmmittee are always improving timing and mearurement technology. Light beams now record racers' times to the within thousandth of a second.

In tennis a computerized tracking system shows whether a ball is in or out. Technology is
still being sought for soccer. According to the article I read " The International Football Association Board(IFAB) has laid down four criteria they want to see in goal- line systems:
1. The technology should only apply to goal-line decisions.
2. The system must be 100% Accurate
3. The signal sent to the Referee must be instantaneous.
4. The signal is not only communicated to the Match Officials."

Therefore, technology is important to all aspects of sports. From making sure the right calls are
made to making very happy fans. Long live "Technology in Sports"!

Exit Questions for IT 365

1. I would explain that ‘technology integration’ is essential for students to get the most from education. There are many tools in technology that aid the teacher and also help the student’s tasks much easier.

2. A concept map to be done on the computer could be used with any subject. For instance, a reading assignment to list the story elements.

3. A. Hardware-computer software-flash drive B. Browser-Mozilla Firefox C. Google

D. Spreadsheet-Excel: Database-Access

4. I think the videos on stress and anger will be beneficial because, even with the smartest students, if they don’t know how to handle stress, they will not be very efficient.

5. Yes, if you have two dependable people because they can both give insight on a topic to get a better understanding of the assignment given.

6. Have students sign up with twitter outside of class and get acquainted with the other students before seeing them in class.

7. I would suggest that the tweets only be done on the computer and not on cell phones, it’s just easier.

8. I didn’t know anything about blogger and I just love it. I think it was a great way for us to introduce ourselves, to get to know our classmates, and use as a notebook for all of our assignments.

9. Just more tools for lesson planning.

10. I didn’t know anything about creating a Teacher Webpage. I was happy to be able to get one started and just add to it once I’m a teacher.

Sexting

Sexting
Wow, I was really amazed by all of this(the act and also how very serious the punishment is).
I read the article "Teens face porn charges in sexting' (http:www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburgtrib/news/mostread/s)_
Three 14 and 15 year old girls were caught sending nude pictures to three 16 and 17 year old boys. The girls are now being charged with manufacturing child porn and the boys are being charged with possession of child porn. They may be faced with more charges because the police believe more people may have seen the photos. This is very serious and we as parents should deal with it as such. I'm very old fashioned and my first thought is they don't need to have cell phones at such a young age anyway! Because they're not allowed to use them at school.
If they have after school activities and need to call for a ride home, they should only be allowed a few minutes to do this. And it doesn't have to be a fancy camera phone. They should be allowed a phone like that at an older age. We have to be strict with our chidlren. We have to get in their business. People are afraid to do this but, it is neccessary. If a school age child has a cell phone, it needs to be highly monitored. The parent should check the phone daily to see who their child is calling or texting and keep up with their minutes. Also, who is calling and texting them.
With all that being said we still have to educate them. We should always take the time to talk our children about topics like this and be very open about them. We should let them watch the same videos we just watched for this assignment and read the articles too! If at all possible, we should let them meet anyone who has been affected by situations like this. Not all children but, most act out when they are not getting proper attention at home. We have to spend quality time with our children, teach them about all the dangers around them, and love them. I think this is pretty much all we can do. As a teacher I wouldn't treat the situation any differently except for the fact that I couldn't monitor my students cell phones like I could my children. I would still take the time to talk to them, show them videos, and always be there to listen to and help them in any way that I could.

PBS Video

PBS Video
Reading Rockets www.readingrockets.org
Do I think videos are effective tools for teaching? Yes, I really do. I think allowing the students to watch a video and letting them see first hand the topic of discussion makes it easier to learn. Teaching/ talking to a child is very effective but, the combination of teaching a child a particular subject and then let them watch a video on the topic is much more effective.

we should learn to be calm and not stress ourselves out.
5. What are the negative medical effects the research team discovered happens from
a 'high hostile' and 'angry person'? High colesterol and Heart Disease.

Adaptive Technologies

Adaptive Technologies Case Studies
Scene 1
There are several methods that teachers can use to accommodate different learning styles. For those students with reading disabilities, I or another student could read the story out loud and have those students answer questions from the story. To accommodate student’s visual impairments, I could have their assignments in larger print or use a transcriber. Also, there may be students who have comprehension problems that need one on one student/teacher interaction.
Scene 2
I think it is a great advantage to have experienced teachers to consult with. By having someone who has already mastered tasks that I am facing alleviates the hassle of my trying to find ways to solve problems. Therefore, I will spend more time implementing strategies in aiding the student.
Scene 3
Marilyn uses graphic organizers to map out the organization of the book that she has decided she wants her students to create. The book will include art, wild animals, and natural habitats. She has designed differenent small activities to get the final product. She uses graphic organizers for labeling the characters, setting, and other elements of the story. She has designed differenent small activities to get the final product. Which would include activities that would allow the children to read and fill in their own graphic organizers, write in their journals, and a sequencing activity to help with comprehension. Any student to finish his/her work early could help Oscar by reading to him.
Scene 4
My experiences using the web to locate information as been ideal. It is an effective way to gather information and saves a lot of time.

Scene 5
The students working with Oscar were not at a disadvantage by being in Oscar's group but an advantage. They benefited by having the teacher work one-on-one with them. The students in Oscar's group were motivated by him because he stayed on task even with his special learning needs. Also, they were benefited by just being in a group rather than working alone because they learned from each other. I don't think Oscar's experience would have been as good as it was if he would have been in isolation with Juanita, I think he worked better being included with his peers. Because I think they motivated him to do a good just like he motivated them.
Scene 6
Marilyn used a WebQuest to help her students learn about the author of the books they had been reading in class. She showed them videos of the author's art techniques. She allowed the students to use graphic organizers to organize the story elements for the book they would make. Marilyn stayed committed to making sure Oscar didn't get left out by having a specialist to assist him. And by using even more technology to help him, such as: the the transcriber and the speech synthesis.

The Beautiful Butterflies

The Beautiful Butterflies
Deep in a lovely meadow of beautiful flowers and trees, lived a very beautiful family of butterflies. Their wings were wide and brightly decorated. The largest was Daddy Butterfly,His wings were a rich, cobalt blue, with splashes of green and yellow. Moma Butterfly was the prettiest purple with bright pink and turquoise dots. Then, there were Brother and Sister Butterfly and they were just as beautiful. They were all just so beautiful and they knew it. They let everyone else know it too! They flew around all day looking down on all the other bugs as they did their daily chores. They used the little pond as a mirror to look at themselves. They flew over the pond all day admiring their beauty. The other bugs were not envious at all, they knew a little secret. Instead, they admired them and complimented them daily. But, the butterflies did not consider the other bugs compliments, instead, they flaunted their beauty everyday. They boasted to be better than all the other bugs. Especially the ants, not only were they plain, they couldn't even fly. The bumble bees were quite boring, as well. They could fly but, they were hairy and their wings were not pretty at all. The ants did not let the butterflies' constant critism bother them. The ants attended the colony and helped any other bug that they could. The bumble bees too! They collected as much nectar from the flowers that they could and made lots of honey. And whenever the bugs saw the butterflies, they would compliment them on how beautiful they looked! The Butterflies would reply, "We know", and fly away. The bugs comforted themselves in knowing they were not the only bugs the butterflies didn't like. The earthworms were ugly, useless, and always digging in the dirt. The grasshoppers were green and gross. The walking sticks wore their names well, they just looked like sticks! But, these bugs didn't let the butterflies' criticism bother them either. They just went about their daily activities and helping any other bug that they could. Then one day the butterfly family had an addition to the family. They proudly awaited the butterfly to spring from its' cacoon. They boasted about how beautiful the new butterfly would be. Soon, the butterfly did break away from it's cacoon and it was very beautiful, just as beautiful as the rest. They were very proud, "come on fly with us", they shouted, "show off your pretty wings". But he just stayed on the branch of the tree, he didn't fly at all. "Your wings are perfectly fine, why can't you fly?", asked Daddy Butterfly. "I'm trying but, I just can't", explained Baby Butterfly. Daddy Butterfly's heart was broken, "how can this be?", he replied. He began to think to himself, "He's not perfect, but, I still love him"! "We love you my son", he said and the whole family embraced him. Just then he had a thought. That's just how I should've felt about the ohter bugs. I didn't think they were perfect but, I shoud've loved them anyway. This made Daddy Butterfly very sad that they had been so mean to all those other bugs. Especially, since the other bugs were always so nice to them! He flew away very grieved. He flew around thinking how his family hadn't been perfect all. They were beautiful on the outside, but not on the inside. Now the other bugs would pay them back because Baby Butterfly couldn't fly. "He's obviously not perfect", he thought. He flew home feeling pretty down! When Daddy Butterfly arrived home, he was delighted to see all the bugs gathered around to welcome Baby Butterfly. The ants, bumble bees, earthworms, grasshoppers, and walking sticks were all there to let Baby Butterfly know that they would always be there to help him in any way they could. This made the Butterfly Family very happy, happier than being beautiful ever could! Daddy Butterfly still wondered, "how can they still love us after all we've done?". Those other bugs knew the Butterfly Family wasn't perfect. The other bugs knew they were beautiful! Their beauty was on the inside. They knew the Butterfly Family would learn this valuable lesson someday and went on loving them! They would love Baby Butterfly too!

Cramberrry

wow, Cramberry is awesome. This is a very useful site. I had fun making the flashcards. I know I will use them for my own personal studies while in college, to help my children study, and to definately in my classroom when I'm a teacher.

Teacher Web Page

I really thought making my own web page was pretty neat, I enjoyed working on it. I definately see how it is necessary to have one as a teacher. My Teacher Web Page includes a Home page, which basiclly gives a introduction to the class. A Course Information Page, which gives a overview of rules and assignments for the class. A Teacher Information Page, which gives instructions on how to reach me with questions or concerns. A Website Page is given with helpful sites for parents and students to use after school.

Second Life

I didn't get a chance to take the tutorial for Second Life. I kept having to start over for one reason or another and eventually I was not able to log on at all. But, personally I don't think I would've liked it anyway. It just seemed a little creepy to me! Some students made some comments about being approached inappropriately! I didn't want to be approached that way and didn't mind not being able to log on.

Going Green by Carpooling

My partner and I have thought of several ways to make the University of Southern Mississippi on the Gulf Coast a more energy efficient, cleaner, greener school. After much discussion we decided that best and easiest way to ‘go green’ on our campus is to make buddies with a nearby classmate neighbor and carpool. This will not only cut back on the rising pollution, but it will save each and every student money every day. As students who are not on a typical university campus, we all travel some amount of distance to and from class. Most of us even have to make that trip twice in one day. Carpoolers can help get from city to city while reducing the volume of traffic on the road. One way to really get this moving is to set up some sort of an account through the university. Student drivers will create a profile with travel preferences such as age, gender, music favorites, smoking, etc., as well as the days of the week in which they will be making the route. They will list the city in which they are coming from or going to and the campus location, along with their plans for arrival and departure times. They can sign up on the USM website and when a good match is found, they can be notified through email or text message. At the end of the trip, both the rider and driver can give positive, negative, or neutral feedback about their companions. The University of Michigan has developed a system called GreenRide for student and employee carpooling, which has worked well so far. They are trying to implement a reward system for the students who carpool by discounting their textbooks. One student stated it is a great way to save money and network with other students. According to the university, since GreenRide has began about five years ago, it is estimated that their carpoolers have saved 30 million driven miles, 1.7 million gallons of gas, and prevented roughly 13,000 tons of carbon dioxide from polluting the environment. The University of Florida also has a form of carpooling. The students pair up and they both pay for the parking decal. In case someone’s partner cannot make it to school, the other registered carpool member may purchase up to six one-day permits per semester at half price, which is half of the current cost of $2.50 for use in non-carpool decal parking areas. Another university who has successfully implemented a carpooling system is the University of Texas at Austin. They support the efforts to reduce traffic congestion and vehicle pollution in the Austin area. They also provide numerous incentives for the fellow carpoolers. Now, lets look at the facts. Car emissions kill 30,000 people each year in the United States. More than half of the people in the U.S. live in areas that failed to meet federal air quality standards at least several days a year. Most ozone pollution is caused by motor vehicles, which accounts for 72% of nitrogen oxides and 52% of reactive hydrocarbons, which are the principal components of smog. SUV’s put out 43% more global-warming pollutants and 47% more are pollution than the average car. It is also believed that many childhood cancers are caused from the pollution in the air.Another incentive to carpooling is it lowers your insurance rate. Most insurance companies offer discount rates to their customers that prove that they are in a carpooling program and that they do not use their car for work or school. Students who carpool also have better parking conditions. We all know that vehicles let off a tremendous amount of pollution. By setting up a system of carpooling, we at USM, can help prevent the destruction of our ozone, reduce the amount of traffic, save millage on our own vehicles, and save a lot of money! We can also meet new friends!Mostafavi, Beata. (January 9, 2009). University of Michigan-Flint drives student carpool effort with help from GreenRide. The Flint Journal. IPhones provided by the college

I think it would be ideal, if the college could afford it. Just to be able to register, order books, and have a map of the college is priceless. A freshmen at a college away from his or her hometown can immediately feel connected. Which can really be a big deal for the student, as well as, the parents! Having to part with one's child for the first time is hard enough, at least they wouldn't have to worry about their child being lost in an unfamiliar place. Especially, if they missed orientation and really didn't know where anything was.

Twitter and Technology in Lower Grades (K-2)

My Thoughts Concerning Twitter:

I think Twitter is a great tool to have, because it is a way to stay connected with others. In class on Wednesday was my first time using it and all of us in the classroom were able to chat with each other without saying a word. My only concern is someone's personal information getting in the wrong hands.

I think having technology in lower grades is awesome. I think with proper guidance the possibilities of education are endless. Computers and Technolgy provide students with phenomenal visual and hands-on experience. It makes learning so much more fun.

The article I read, Usinig Technology in the Early Childhood Classroom, concerning technology in lower grades was a question and answer type article. Where some questions were given for Dr. Perry to answer. Of the questions given was ,"Are young children's brains(ages three through six) well suited for the use of technology. In short He said these children brains are well capable of learning technology and that it is very beneficial to them, when guided properly.

Dr. Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D., is an internationally recognized authority on brain development and children in crisis. Dr. Perry leads the ChildTrauma Academy, a pioneering center providing service, research and training in the area of child maltreatment (http://www.childtrauma.org/). In addition he is the Medical Director for Provincial Programs in Children's Mental Health for Alberta, Canada. Dr. Perry served as consultant on many high-profile incidents involving traumatized children, including the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado; the Oklahoma City Bombing; and the Branch Davidian siege. His clinical research and practice focuses on traumatized children-examining the long-term effects of trauma in children, adolescents and adults. Dr. Perry's work has been instrumental in describing how traumatic events in childhood change the biology of the brain. The author of more than 200 journal articles, book chapters, and scientific proceedings and is the recipient of a variety of professional awards.

Chapter Three: ProductivityTool and Application Software

Word Processing

Word Processing is a great tool in the classroom. This tool is a great way for users to become more computer efficient. Word Processing is basiclly used for writing and saving documents on the computer. Some basic features of Word Processing are: The Bold Key,which is used to make characters bold for emphasis; The Center Key, which centers text between the left and right margins; The Print Command, which allows the user to get a printout of their work. Word Processing also provide great features which allows the student to produce perfect papers. Among those are the spellcheck feature and grammar check. The user can check the spelling of a word by choosing the spellcheck. If the word is spelled incorrectly, the user can select the correct spelling of the word. The grammar check feature will highlight a misconstructed sentence or suggest the rewording of a sentence. Word Processing is a time saver when having to write book reports, research papers, or any type of document. Because it eliminates the need to make a rough draft. All editing can be done right on the screen. The user has the option to save and print what is chosen.

I will definitely be using Word Processing right from the start. First, for the introduction of the computer to the student based on grade level. Next, I'll start to introduce basic textual material such as: the introduction of themselves(written description) and typing spelling words. Then, I'll introduce professional writing such as: a business letter or making a letter head for a company.

Spreadsheets

Spreadsheets are used for organizing material on the screen. Spreadsheets are composed of rows and columns. A formula can be put in each cell to produce an outcome for that particular cell or the entire spreadsheet.

The basic uses of spreadsheets in the classroom are for science, math, and for understanding formulas found in math. But, the other subjects are not left out. For instance, in social studies when studying population growth and other topics, spreadsheets are very useful.

I will use spreadsheets in the classroom with my students for activities in math, science, social studies, and possibly other subjects. Also, for myself for maintaining student records.

Databases

Databases are a must have for the home, school, office, or anywhere files are kept. Because Databases takes the place of file cabinets, file drawers, or anything used to keep files. Instead, files can be stored right on the computer.

I will use Databases in my classroom in many ways, such as: for student records, student grades, and for schedules.

Concept-Mapping Tools

Concept Mapping Tools is a phenomenal way to visually motivate creative thinking in the student and teacher alike.
