Technolgy is one of the ways sports is continually changing in the world today. Technology in
sports have been around for a long while and has been very helpful. For instance, instant replay help referees in making the right call. These aides are crucial in allowing for a fair game. In the game of basket ball referees can use instant replay to verify if a shot was taken before the shot clock ended. In the game of football instant replay is very important, as well. Not only for the referee and players, but for the coaches and fans. The coach wants to know if his team is being treated fair and every fan wants to see a spectacular play a second, third, and even a fourth time. In the article I read five ways technology changed football were listed. Among them instant replay was listed. According to the article, "The first use of instant replay in a football game came on December 7, 1963, near the end of the Army-Navy game in Philadelphia when Army quarterback Rollie Stichweh scored on a 1-yard run. Famed CBS director Tony Verna had come up with the idea for "video replay" to fill dead air time between plays. After three quarters of frustrating glitches trying to get the technology to work, Verna finally told announcer Lindsey Nelson, "Here it comes!" as Stichweh faked a handoff and darted into the end zone. This is not live," Nelson told his viewers as they watched the Army quarterback's run again. "Ladies and gentlemen, Army did not score again." A new was era was born. Verna correctly perdicted that his creation would become a huge success. Now, of course, it is used on virtually every
play, and since 1999, has been an important tool to help officials review disputed plays during a game." Also, in football there are other ways technology is being used. Thanks to the computer statistics can be kept about teams, players, and trends. Various websites specialize in keeping stats and other information.
Another example in football are high tech coaching communication devices. Helmet transmitters
allows the coach to talk to the quarterback about plays. Over the years technology has changed the way coaches are able to do their jobs. Coaches and players can analyze the game on their laptops on the airplane while flying home from a game. Even in watching the game on television, fans can enjoy high tech camera shorts at various angles. Also, slow motion camera shots, player and coach microphones, updates and scores from other games etc. ,which all make the game more exciting.
In the olympics technology is very important. Remember Michael Phelps' great victory during
last years summer olympics. Timing devices were used to verify his close win. Engineers with the U.S. Olymic Cmmittee are always improving timing and mearurement technology. Light beams now record racers' times to the within thousandth of a second.
In tennis a computerized tracking system shows whether a ball is in or out. Technology is
still being sought for soccer. According to the article I read " The International Football Association Board(IFAB) has laid down four criteria they want to see in goal- line systems:
1. The technology should only apply to goal-line decisions.
2. The system must be 100% Accurate
3. The signal sent to the Referee must be instantaneous.
4. The signal is not only communicated to the Match Officials."
Therefore, technology is important to all aspects of sports. From making sure the right calls are
made to making very happy fans. Long live "Technology in Sports"!
